RMS ‘Hoops for Heart’ Raises Thousands for Charity

The money will go to the American Heart Association.

Rye Middle school students who shot hoops for heart raised about $3,000 for the American Heart Associations this week. About 100 students participated in the national American Heart Association event and three won for being the top fundraisers: seventh grader Andy Gomez, who raised $227; seventh grader Maddie Johnson, who raised $130 and sixth grader Tommy Monaghan, who raised $125.

Students were encouraged to fundraise or donate $15 or more to participate in the basketball event, where they played various shooting games and played three on three games. They also learned about heart disease, obesity and ways to improe their cardiovascular health.

Kelly Duffy, a RMS gym teacher, started running this event through the physical education department about ten years ago and it has become an annual event.

The tournament winners were:

6th Grade:    Troy Egan, Nick Roach, Alex Noga, Thomas Flaherty

7th Grade:   Max Samberg, Owen Hull, AJ Thompson, Will Tepedino

8th Grade:      Chris Petersen, Ryan Kirkpatrick, Will Tuttun, Mack McGovern

Let's look at the appropriateness of this post. First, it's clearly an ad because it points to aRead More specific insurance agent at a specific agency to contact. Second, it attempts to hide being an ad behind what may be useful information (or not). Third, the "person" who posted it doesn't use their real name. Instead, they use a pseudonym Divorce Information NOW. That doesn’t seem terribly reassuring to me. This the third advertising post on the “announcements” space since Rye Patch converted to the new site layout. Seems a bit of a mess to me. But hopefully someone will come along and figure out who the real poster is, their link to the advertised agent and agency, and then delete the post. After all, if it’s an ad, it should be labeled as such and the poster should pay for having it run. If that doesn’t happen, Patch won’t be able to pay its employees to keep real content on the site.
