RHS Students Recognized for Excellence

An announcement from the Rye City School District.

At the December 11 Board of Education meeting, Rye City School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Alvarez presented Rye Recognition of Excellence Awards to five Rye High School students who have recently earned outstanding athletic accomplishments. The award recipients, listed alphabetically, are Kelly Delane, Melissa Fulenwider, Katie Konopka, Catherine Livingston, and Charlotte Nixon.

Kelly, Melissa, Katie, and Charlotte are all members of the Girls Swim Team. They competed at the State Championships held in Ithaca in mid-November and achieved excellent results. Melissa placed 5th in the 100 breaststroke and 8th in the 100 freestyle. All four girls placed 10th overall in the 400 free relay. In the words of Coach Shannon Bolger, “Kelly, Melissa, Katie, and Charlotte are not only great swimmers but are also wonderful individuals. For the past two years these girls have competed together in the 400 free relay and became stronger after each meet. They swam their best time at states during trials in a time of 3:40.46.” Catherine Livingston was recognized as a Con Edison “Athlete of the Week” in October after being nominated by Coach Rich Savage. Catherine plays soccer, basketball, and softball, and is captain of all three varsity teams. She is also a National Merit Commended Scholar, an AP Scholar, and a member of the National Honor Society. Catherine is also highly involved in and around the community, assisting with youth sports and volunteering for a variety of initiatives.

Dr. Alvarez praised all five students and presented them with certificates of acknowledgment.
