[GALLERY] Meet Your New Teacher

Say hello to more new faces in Rye City School District.

The  will have several new faces when students return in September. Say hello to them!

  • Mark McWilliams: RHS & RMS Latin Teacher

Mr. McWilliams comes to Rye with nine years of experience teaching Latin at the middle and high school levels. Since 2007, he has taught various levels of Latin in the New Rochelle City School District, where he created and taught advanced Latin courses which begin in the sixth grade and rebuilt the Latin program. Prior to this, he was a Latin teacher at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx for four years. He has also taught at the college level at Brooklyn College, Columbia University, the University of Illinois and the University of Connecticut.

  • Barbara Mehlman: Library Media Specialist, Milton

Ms. Mehlman previously worked at Pelham Middle School, where she created lessons on evaluating websites and developing research, taught students to use various databases, and evaluated and selected e-books for the school’s library media center. She has also student taught at Greenacres Elementary School in Scarsdale, where she incorporated technology and literature into lessons, presented multisensory lessons, assisted in developing reading lists and promoted the library program. In addition, she co-chaired the Building Bridges Program at Murray Avenue School in Larchmont, a weeklong event that teaches students about differences in learning abilities, challenges and strengths that people experience, and has co-chaired SEPTA faculty grants in Mamaroneck. 

  • James O'Hara: RHS Guidance Counselor

As a former college counselor at Xavier High School in New York, N.Y., Mr. O’Hara has advised juniors and seniors, processed college applications, facilitated college fairs and visits from representatives, coordinated Career Day events and Senior Transition Workshops, and directed presentations on financial aid and the admissions process. Prior to this role, he served as a guidance counselor at the school, providing PSAT preparations, individual counseling, group guidance and crisis management, among other duties. He has also served as a basketball and rugby coach, senior task force member, Xavier Higher Achievement Program assistant director, faculty leader on summer trips, and supervisor and proctor for SAT exams.
