Town of Rye Offering Democracy Course for High School Students

A college-level civics course whose initial semester will deal with why citizens do not vote will be offered to high school students in the Town of Rye starting February 6, 2010, Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin announced today.

Teaching the course will be William A. Tobin, Ph.D., J.D., visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Duke University in Durham, NC. Professor Tobin is also a consulting attorney for the Center for Civil Rights at University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill, NC.

The course has been offered to all three school districts in the Town of Rye (Rye Neck, Port Chester, Blind Brook), but the course will be taught in a Port Chester classroom. Students from Blind Brook and Rye Neck who want to take the course on their own initiative are welcome to enroll.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience the disciplines that a Duke University professor brings to the teaching process. We are grateful to the Town of Rye and to Building Community Bridges for making this opportunity possible," said Port Chester Superintendent Dr. Donald K. Carlisle.
