The Committee to Save the Bird Homestead will present a guided walk to view and learn about the salt marshes of the Blind Brook estuary on Saturday, July 24 at 2 p.m. Alison Beall, curator of Marshlands Conservancy, will lead the program. Marshes provide specialized habitat for many animals and plants, as well as protection from flooding. Since late April, their importance has been a focus of the national news, as the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico menaces coastal wetlands in five states. Ms. Beall will point out the plants that have adapted to the presence of salt water and explain the difference between high and low marshes. She will discuss the birds and other wildlife that search for their food in the marshes and mud flats. The program is co-sponsored by Friends of Marshlands and Science Friday Initiative. Participants should meet at the Bird Homestead, 600 Milton Road, wear walking or hiking shoes, and bring binoculars, if they have them.
