Question to former School Board member Alan H. Salzman: Did you ever hold a meeting this early when you were on the board?

Answer: "Never."

This morning a small group of about 10 people waited in the library of Blind Brook for a regular meeting of the Blind Brook School Board to commence. At 8 a.m., Friday morning. Regular meetings are usually held the second and last Monday of each month.

There’s nothing like a strangely timed meeting to provoke questions from residents. The early hour of today’s Blind Brook Board of Education prompted one resident to chastise the board members at the end of the meeting. It was then board president Sherry Zarkower explained that the unusual time was actually standard practice for the August meeting.

“This is the only meeting at this hour of the year,” said Zarkower. “To be clear we’ve done this a number of years.”

Not an end-run around transparency, Zarkower explained the August meeting was scheduled to circumvent tricky summer vacation schedules and ensure one particular order of business got done: “We need to pass the tax warrant to send tax notices on September 1.”
