Nine Westchester County schools appeared on the list. Out of all Westchester schools, Yonkers High School ranked the highest at number 41.

The magazine used several methods to rank schools. It analyzed academic and enrollment data for more than 21,000 public schools across the country and then placed them into gold, silver, bronze or honorable mention categories. The magazine also looked at how well each school served its students, using each state's proficiency standards. It also examined how well each school prepared students for college by examining the courses offered through Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs.

Both Blind Brook and Rye High Schools placed in the gold medal category. They ranked just about equal on the magazine's college readiness index, which measures how well students handle college level coursework in AP and IB classes.

Both schools have appeared on the list in previous years. Blind Brook is a nationally recognized school of excellence, while Rye High School has consistently been ranked as one of the country's best high schools by several publications.
