Last night in the Quarter Final of the Section 1, Division 2 playoffs, at the Sport O Rama Rink the Rye Garnets (No. 10 seed at 10-9-2) crushed the Pearl River Pirates (No. 2 seed at 16-3-1) by a score of 9-2 !  The Garnets now advance to the Semi-Final round of the Section 1, Division 2 playoffs facing off against the John Jay Cross River Indians (No. 3 seed at 17-4-0)  tomorrow Friday, February 21 at 6:00pm at the Brewster Ice Arena. This will be a rematch of the last game of the regular season when the Garnets stunned the Indians 5-4!

Rye dominated from the opening faceoff, scoring on their second shot of the game and never looked back. They lead 4-0 at the end of the first period and 7-1 at the end of the second frame. It was a “great team effort and great team win again”;  all three offensive lines are producing and the defense and goaltending have been able to contain the opposition’s top goal scorers - “our depth is starting to take shape and pay off” says Coach Friesen.

Goals last night were provided by:  Cal Hynson with a hat trick (3), Connor Hatch with 2, and Andrew Urbanczyk (his second game in a row scoring the first goal of the game), Connor McGovern, Theo Bresolin, and Matt Homes all with one goal each.  Assisting last night were: Will Hynson (once on his brother’s goal) and Connor McGovern with 2 each, and Cal Hynson, Matt Holmes, Derek Mullane, Connor Hatch, Theo Bresolin and Griffin Tutun all with one assist each. Coach Jason Friesen selected Cal Hynson as the “player of the game”.

Seven days ago the Garnets became the “dangerous underdogs”  when they stunned the No. 3 ranked John Jay Indians 5-4 in the last game of the regular season. Since then the Garnets have eliminated the No. 7 and No. 3 seeded teams from the playoffs by a combined score of 14-4.  The Indians have won both their playoff games by a score of 5-2; first knocking off Carmel, and then eliminating Rye Town Harrison last night. On Friday, both teams will be looking for revenge: Rye for last season’s defeat in the Section 1, D2 Championship game by John Jay; and, John Jay for the last game of the regular season a week ago. Tomorrow’s winner will advance to the Section 1 , D2 Championship game for a second year in a row on Sunday.

It should be a another great game tomorrow night at BIA, well worth the 40 minute drive. Come out and cheer your “underdog” Garnets on! We need fans at John Jay’s home rink!
