TJN Corrects Story that Implied Jovanovich Was Guilty of Sexual Harassment

The Jovanovich campaign sent the following press release on a Journal News report that inaccurately implied Jovanovich had been found guilty of sexual harassment.

Journal News Acknowledges Inaccurate Reporting on Deputy Mayor Peter Jovanovich

The Journal News published on September 9 a correction to a column written by Phil Reisman the day before. In the column, Mr. Reisman intimated that Rye’s Deputy Mayor had been found guilty in a lawsuit twenty years ago of sexual harassment and sex discrimination.

As acknowledged by the Journal News, the facts are completely the opposite. Here is their correction:

A jury awarded an employee $450,000 for wrongful termination in a 1997 lawsuit brought against McGraw Hill School Publishing and its president and CEO at the time, Peter Jovanovich, who is now an independent candidate for Rye mayor. The jury ruled against the plaintiff on additional charges of sex discrimination and sexual harassment. A column by Phil Reisman on Page 3A on Sunday omitted the ruling against the plaintiff.

To be completely precise, the lawsuit was initiated in 1993, not 1997. And, the harassment charge was dismissed by a Federal judge as being without merit before trial.

Mr. Reisman personally called Mr. Jovanovich yesterday. He offered his apologies and expressed his regret regarding the misreporting of the lawsuit.
