State of Emergency for Hurricane: Rye Area Prepares

Local government and law enforcement met today to prepare for Hurricane Irene this weekend.

As of 4:30 p.m., Governor Cuomo has declared a state of emergency for the state of New York in anticipation of Hurricane Irene. But local officials have already been working throughout the day to get ready.

Authorities in both the City of Rye and the Village of Rye Brook are preparing for the growing possibility of Hurricane Irene having significant impact in the area this weekend.

In Rye Brook, that meant activating the Village's extensive coastal response plan. David Burke, assistant to the village administrator, explained that means every department will be deployed and ready for the storm.

From ensuring all basins and drains are clear to reviewing all open building permits for possible hazardous conditions to ensuring road access, Burke said residents of Rye Brook should be assured there is a plan in place.

Burke issued the following statement this afternoon:

Village of Rye Brook urges residents to take steps to prepare for heavy rain, storm surge, and strong winds. Make sure your emergency supply kits and Go Bags are stocked and ready to go with supplies like water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, and extra batteries.

Residents should take the time prior to the storm’s arrival to secure loose outdoor items that can become projectiles in high winds such as but not limited to garbage cans, BBQs, propane tanks, portable basketball hoops, backyard umbrellas and chairs.

  • Clear gutters of debris. In the event of power loss DO NOT attempt to run generators indoors due to the build up of potentially fatal carbon monoxide.
  • Do not attempt to cross flooded roadways.
  • Do not approach downed electrical lines
  • Continue to monitor local news media and weather outlets for up-to-the minute information on this potentially dangerous storm including its path, intensity and time frames.

All Rye Brook residents should prepare for the possibility of power outages during this time period extending into the overnight and until the posted NWS expiration date and time.

Residents experiencing an interruption in electrical service should contact Con Edison Directly at 1-800 75CONED to report their outage. All affected residents should call Con Edison even if the outage was reported by their neighbor.

If you experience an emergency contact the Rye Brook Police Department by dialing 911. Do not dial 911 for general information, 911 is for emergency use only.

STAY INFORMED, BE PREPARED, HAVE A PLAN
