Gun Ownership in Rye

A look at The Journal News' map of gun ownership in Westchester shows who has guns in the City of Rye.

When the Journal News published a map of gun ownership in Westchester County on Dec. 22, the article went viral and a mix of opinions flooded the Internet. While some protested the decision to publish the public information, others said they were glad to have it. Many were not concerned with privacy rights or ethics of the matter, and just wanted to see who they knew who owned guns.

A look at the map shows that the city of Rye has less registered gun owners than many other towns or cities in Westchester County. There is a gun owner in almost every neighborhood and Forest Avenue is the most populated with gun owners.

To the west, Harrison is much more heavily populated with gun owners, as is Port Chester to the north.

Ah, geeze, why'd they have to go and publish this stuff? Now there's another thing to do to keep up with the "Joneses" - get a gun permit and I supposed a gun.

There's been a big "blowback" in journalism circles nationwide about this story gambit Bob. Not many defenders, lots of FOI concerns. Not that FOI laws generally bother anyone in today's Rye City Hall - but still. Here's the Poynter story on this. "Where The Journal News went wrong in publishing names, addresses of gun owners." http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/als-morning-meeting/199218/where-the-journal-news-went-wrong-in-publishing-names-addresses-of-gun-owners/
