Rye 9/11 Memorial Getting Spruce-Up for 10th Anniversary

Plans are underway to make sure Rye's 9/11 Memorial is in tip-top shape by the tenth anniversary.

Mayor Doug French says plans are underway to prepare a 10th Anniversary Memorial Service for Rye that addresses every dimension of the day's significance.

“There are three themes we want to touch on: to remember the families of Rye citizens lost, to honor our first responders, and what has become a national phenomena, is treat this as a Day of Service [and] how to give back to our community,” said Mayor French during the August 10th  City Council meeting.

New spotlights have been installed around the gazebo honoring the Rye citizens lost during the World Trade Center attacks in New York City and additional landscaping will be completed in time for the memorial program, according to City Manager Scott Pickup.

Plans are still underway and will also include reflection time at the nearby fire house, said Pickup during the City Council meeting.

Rye Patch is gathering local images of 9/11 and its aftermath.

If you have images related to this day in our nation's history—whether it be a train ticket you were carrying in your pocket that day, a keepsake from a loved one or even a photo of where you were on 9/11, we'd like to include it in our gallery.

We're also looking for people to interview who have a moving and engaging story to tell about Sept. 11. If you started a charity to help local 9/11 families or first responders, if you decided to become a police officer or joined the Armed Services because of 9/11, or if your life has been indelibly changed by the events of that day, we want to hear from you.
