Report: Financing of Tappan Zee Bridge Project Draws Scrutiny

At least a few groups are questioning how the bridge reconstruction project is being financed.

A $511 million loan to help finance the reconstruction of the Tappan Zee Bridge is reportedly drawing some scrutiny in part because this type of loan has never been used in such a fashion, according to The Journal News.

Reporters Theresa Juva-Brown and Khurram Saeed write that using the clean water fund to finance the loan is being viewed skeptically by a few groups.

"The state does not have a clear plan and is very creatively and innovatively looking at all these other funding sources, but this was not the right fit, certainly not at the expense of needed and worthwhile projects," Veronica Vanterpool, executive director of Tri-State Transportation Campaign, told The Journal News. Also critical of the financing move is Riverkeeper, according to the publication.

Last month, President Barack Obama praised the project during a speech where he used the bridge as the backdrop to discuss the importance of the nation's infrastructure.
