Message from Mayor to Rye Brook Residents Concerning Coyote Attacks

Rye Brook Mayor Joan Feinstein said the village is working with state and county officials, along with the city of Rye, after coyote attacks in the nearby city.

Rye Patch received this message from Rye Brook Village Hall concerning the recent coyote attacks in Rye. The village said it is working with the city to address the problem. Below is a message from Mayor Joan Feinstein:

The Village of Rye Brook is aware and is monitoring the recent aggressive behavior of coyotes in the City of Rye.  Rye Brook officials have been in communication with the City of Rye administration and its police department. The village has also reached out to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and a local trapper to determine the best course of action for the Village of Rye Brook. The Rye Brook police has been monitoring and tracking all reported coyote sightings and their behaviors within the village since early January. To date, in Rye Brook there has been no reported aggressive behavior exhibited by coyotes toward people or pets.

The village is urging the public to report to the police department any coyote sightings in the village noting the location and time of day a coyote is seen, whether or not the coyote stood its ground, went toward, or followed people or pets and if the coyote exhibited any aggressive behavior toward people or pets.  Rye Brook police can be reached at (914) 937-1020 or if it is an emergency call 911.  In the event there is a change in coyote behavior additional action will be taken to ensure the safety of the village residents.

To prevent attracting coyotes and other animals onto your property, please remember to not leave children or small pets outside unattended, remove any food sources, and seal trash containers.
