Jovanovich Gathers Signatures Needed to Run for Mayor

The Jovanovich campaign announced today that it had collected more than 500 signatures needed for the Peter Jovanovich to challenge Joe Sack for the mayor's seat this November.

The Jovanovich for Mayor campaign announced today that it has gathered more than 500 signatures, which means current councilman Peter Jovanovich is qualified to run Independently for mayor this fall.  An Independent mayoral candidate needs 366 signatures on petitions in order to be placed on the ballot. The deadline for submitting the petitions to the Westchester Board of Elections is Aug. 20.

“In just ten days, over 30 volunteers have worked nights and weekends to reach this number,” said Jovanovich. “It’s evident that Rye voters want a choice this November.”

Jovanovich announced his candidacy for mayor on July 31 after the Rye Democratic City Committee did not select a mayoral candidate, which would have left current councilman Joe Sack, a Republican, uncontested in the election. The Rye Republican City Committee nominated Sack for mayor along with his Rye United campaign earlier this summer. Jovanovich originally said he would not be running for mayor or re-election to his council seat.

Four council members’ terms will end this fall – city council incumbents Peter Jovanovich, Julie Killian and Richard Filippi and incumbent Mayor French.  Filippi and French are not running for re-election.

Killian joins Sack on the Rye United ticket, along with Kirstin Bucci and Terry McCartney. The Rye Democratic City Committee nominated Shari Punyon and Meg Cameron for council seats. Rye realtor Jason Mehler is running on the Independence Party line for council. Incumbent councilwoman Catherine Parker, whose term is not up this year, is running for County Legislator of District 7.
