How to Register to Vote

In honor of National Voter Registration Day, we’re giving you all the information you need on how and where to register to vote.

If you haven’t yet registered to vote, get it off your to-do list now.

Yesterday was National Voter Registration Day, when thousands of local, state and national organizations mobilized to make sure millions of people don’t miss the chance to cast their vote in this year’s elections.

Six million people didn’t vote in the 2008 elections because they either did not know how to register or because they missed the voter registration deadline.

In New York, there's still time. Mailed registration applicatons must be postmarked by Oct. 12 and received by Oct. 17 for the Nov. 6 General Election. In person registration must be received by Oct. 12.

Here’s information on how you can register in time for the Nov. 6 elections.

You can fill out a voter registration form in person at your local Board of Elections office.

  • Putnam County Board of Elections, 25 Old Route 6, Carmel, NY 10512
  • Rockland County Board of Elections, 11 New Hempstead Road, New City, NY 10956
  • Westchester County Board of Elections, 25 Quarropas St., White Plains, NY 10601

You can enter your name directly into the state Board of Elections mailing list database to have a New York State Voter Registration Form mailed to you.

You can call the 1-800-FOR-VOTE hotline to request a voter application.

You can download a PDF version of the New York State Voter Registration Form, print the form, complete and sign it, and mail it to your county board of elections.
