Vandals Strike Purchase Street Artworks

Vandals damaged and stole one of the polymer artworks installed on Purchase Street by the Rye Arts Center.

Rye Patch reader Bob Zahm tipped us off to the vandalization and theft of one of the artworks on display near Shoes-N-More on Purchase Street at sometime on Saturday night.

The figure was one of 15 polymer figures by artists Joan Benefiel and Jeremy Leichman. Called “Hudson River Pilings Project” the 'glowing translucent fire-orange figures set atop 8-foot wooden poles' have been on display since April 27 on Purchase Street.

Rye sculptor Bob Clyatt curated the display for the Rye Arts Center as part of the exhibit  "Beyond Rodin – New Directions in Contemporary Figurative Sculpture."
