Rye Police: Do Not Leave Valuables in Cars During Holidays

Thieves often operate during the holidays, when people shop and visit friends and family. Police also warn residents not to drink and drive.

The City of Rye Police Department issued a warning for residents that thieves who target cars often operate during the holiday season.

According to a notice put out by Rye police here on Nixle, that's "when people tend to leave valuables in their cars while shopping or while visiting, or when people have large amounts of cash or merchandise on their persons or in their homes."

"We ask that you protect your property and assist us in preventing crime by NOT leaving valuables in your car," police say. "If you must leave items in your car, please secure them out of sight in the trunk. If you have house guests, please encourage them to bring purses and other valuables inside, rather than leaving them in their cars. Please take appropriate measures to secure your home when you are out. If you hear or observe suspicious activity, please notify the police promptly by calling 911."
