Rye Police Blotter: Pot Smokers Abandon Car, Teens Drink at Construction Site

A rundown of police incidents in the Rye area.

Rye Police dealt with a variety of incidents in the last two weeks. From teens using food items to vandalize other people's property—an occurrence that is becoming more common throughout the area—to people, literally, throwing stones, at homes ( maybe they've never heard the age-old advice about not throwing these objects at glass houses). Either way, police were busy this week responding to both minor and unorthodox crimes. Continue reading to find out the various incidents, both large and small, that police recently have responded to in the area.

Old Post Road Resident Gets Egged

On August 10 an Old Post Road resident told police that he was woken by a dog barking and looked out the window to see a black vehicle parked on Old Post Road. He confronted two older teens in his yard who then fled the scene. The man then discovered that his vehicle had been egged inside and out and eggs were also thrown at his house and garage.

Couple's Home Vandalized

On August 8 a Cope Circle resident told police that an unknown person broke his kitchen window by throwing a stone. He reported that he and his wife arrived home after midnight and the babysitter told him that a stone was thrown through the window while she was sleeping in the living room, minutes before they arrived home. The man and his wife also reported observing a vehicle on their street driving without headlights on when they arrived.

Alcohol-Drinking Teens

On August 7 an anonymous caller told police that a home on Drake Avenue was supposed to be empty, but that he heard and saw kids in the house. Officers arrived on scene and found seven teenagers drinking in the basement of the construction site. One of the youths parents owns the residence and were called to the scene. They declined to press charges. Underage youths were released to their parents and the alcohol was confiscated.

Car Window Smashed

On August 7, a 49-year-old Rye resident reported that a fist-sized rock had been thrown through the rear window of his van, which shattered the entire window. Nothing was stolen from the vehicle.

Thieves Steal from Con Edison Worker

On August 5 a Con Edison employee reported that an unkown person stole a $2,500 electronic device from his desk cabinet in his office on Theodore Fremd Avenue.

Pot Smokers Abandon Car

On August 4 an anonymous caller told police that a group of youths were loitering in the rear of a private property on Central Avenue and that when approached they fled in a silver SUV towards High Street. When the police arrived on scene, the vehicle was parked, unoccupied, with the driver's window in the down position. The vehicle had a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the interior. In plain view on the center console were marijuana buds on a folded plane ticket. Police also located a green bong and gas mask on a nearby picnic table. Officers searched for suspects with negative results.

Suspicious Vehicle

On August 2, a passerby reported a suspicious vehicle on Playland Access Drive. The White Jeep Cherokee was abandoned on the side of the road  and the passerby witnessed several occupants remove the license plates and walk away from the vehicle. Police report that the vehicle was in junk condition with the seats and most interior fixtures removed. The vehicle was towed.
