Rye Police: 12-Year-Old Girl Approached by Suspicious Vehicle

An alert from the Rye City police department.

A 12-year-old Rye girl was walking home when a man in a suspicious vehicle approached her and asked if she needed a ride home shorty after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, police report. He stopped twice to ask the girl if she needed a ride before she fled toward her home and he drove away.

"There was no overt attempt to approach the girl other than asking her if she needed a ride home," police report.

The incident occurred near Brevoort Lane and Greenhaven Road. The vehicle is described as a bright blue compact car with a black and white "taxi" sticker on the door and a yellow license plate. The driver is described as an older white male, balding with white hair, with a crokked tooth. He spoke with a heavy accent.

Anyone with information about this incident should call the City of Rye police department at 914-967-1234.

Let's look at the appropriateness of this post. First, it's clearly an ad because it points to aRead More specific insurance agent at a specific agency to contact. Second, it attempts to hide being an ad behind what may be useful information (or not). Third, the "person" who posted it doesn't use their real name. Instead, they use a pseudonym Divorce Information NOW. That doesn’t seem terribly reassuring to me. This the third advertising post on the “announcements” space since Rye Patch converted to the new site layout. Seems a bit of a mess to me. But hopefully someone will come along and figure out who the real poster is, their link to the advertised agent and agency, and then delete the post. After all, if it’s an ad, it should be labeled as such and the poster should pay for having it run. If that doesn’t happen, Patch won’t be able to pay its employees to keep real content on the site.
