According to Greenwich police, a Rye resident called seeking the department's help in checking on the welfare of her husband. Stamford police originally had reported that the man was from Greenwich.

"She related that her husband frequently comes to Greenwich and rides his bicycle on the trails within the Mianus River Park," according to a press release issued by Lt. Kraig Gray, Greenwich police's public information officer. "The wife contacted the police only after her husband failed to come home at his normal hour."

Shortly after 8 p.m., members of the , the , the Greenwich Emergency Medical Service and a K-9 officer from the Stamford Police Department in a coordinated effort fanned out within the park to search for the overdue person.

About 90 minutes later, one of the teams located the man's body.

"It was determined that the location of the body was on the Stamford side of the park and that the Stamford Police Department would be the lead agency investigating the circumstances surrounding the apparent suicide," Gray said in the statement.

Original Story

The Stamford Police Department reports that an unidentified Greenwich man was found dead in Mianus River Park between 10:30 and 11 p.m. last night, having rode his mountain bike into the park and committed suicide.

"The Greenwich Police Department did a good job of tracking him down in a remote area," SPD captain Richard Conklin said. "The 53-year old Greenwich resident who frequented Mianus River Park was found hanging from a tree. It was suicide."

When the Greenwich Police Department found the man, they notified the SPD, as Mianus River Park is within SPD's jurisdiction.

"He rode his mountain bike there often, and he rode it down to where he was found. The bike was found with him," Conklin said.

SPD has not disclosed the identity of the deceased Greenwich male, as his family has not yet been notified.
