Rye Brook Blotter: Prescription Fraud, Identity Theft, Mirror Stolen from Mercedes

A rundown of police incidents in the Village of Rye Brook.

In the recent weeks, Rye Brook police have dealt with several cases of identity theft, as well as a theft from a car and several cases of prescription fraud at a local pharmacy. The fraud is also being investigated by state authorities.

Here's a rundown of recent police incidents in the village:

Prescription Fraud

On Feb. 22, a pharmacist at a drug store on South Ridge Street told police that between Dec. 27 and Jan. 11 his store had received several fraudulent prescriptions for oxycodone. The first prescription was filled on Dec. 27. On Jan. 11, the state Office of the Medicaid Inspector General, an agency tasked with monitoring the state’s Medicaid program, contacted the pharmacist regarding a possible forgery. The office needed a copy of the possible forged prescriptions, which the pharmacist gave to them. The pharmacist has not been accepting any more prescriptions he deems suspicious and has turned over to authorities several copies of prescriptions he thought were suspicious. The investigation is ongoing.

Fire in a Fireplace

On Feb. 21, a Brookridge Court resident called 911 to report a fire in the home’s fireplace. Sparks were flying out of the chimney. An officer arrived on the scene and discovered that a log stuck in the chimney was emitting the sparks. The fire department also responded and resolved issue. No one was injured.

GPS Theft

On Feb. 19, a Neuton Avenue resident reported that an unknown person stole a $100 Garmin GPS and $20 iPod adapter cord from the resident’s 2006 Jeep while it was parked in the driveway. The Jeep had a ragtop that had been pulled back, which allowed the thief to reach into the car and unlock the door. There was no other damage to the car.

Thief Attempts to Steal $1700 from Resident’s Bank Account

On Feb. 18, a person attempted to cash a check in a Rye Brook resident’s name. The victim told Rye Brook police that upon checking his account he discovered that on the previous day a deposit was made into his account for $4,266.17.  He checked with his wife and found that she did not make the deposit. He called his bank, Chase Bank in Greenwich, and cancelled his account number. Apparently, a suspect had made a deposit at a Chase Bank location in New Jersey and attempted to withdraw $1700 from the man’s bank account the same day. However, the suspect was unable to provide the teller with the proper identification, so the person was unable to withdraw the money.

Passenger Side Mirror Stolen from Mercedes

A person told police on Feb. 18 that someone stole the passenger side mirror from her 2009 Mercedes sometime between 3 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. while the car was parked in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center across from Chase Bank, where the victim works. The cost of mirror was $2,000.

Suspicious Activity on Woman’s Credit Card

On Feb. 10, a woman reported identity theft to Rye Brook police. The woman said Discover contacted her about suspicious activity on her account. The two charges on the credit card totaled $700. There was also an invoice from Apple about a $31 purchase. The woman said she did not make any of the purchases. Police advised her to contact the appropriate credit agencies. The incident is under investigation.
