Police continue to investigate the death of 62-year-old Ossining resident Jane Shakman, in Briarcliff Manor the day prior.
The driver of the vehicle who struck Shakman is a 26-year-old Briarcliff Manor resident. She was arrested at the scene for alleged vehicle and traffic violations and for driving with a suspended license.
"Apparently, the bicyclist was traveling westbound on Chappaqua Road heading toward 9A," Chief of Police Norman Campion said today. "As she got to Tappan Terrace, a car driven by Valerie Naber was driving eastbound on Chappaqua Road and attempted to turn left onto Tappan Terrace. [Shakman] was struck as she was passing through the intersection."
Campion said the department "received many 911 calls" reporting the incident.
"We arrived very quickly along with the paramedic and ambulance crew," he said. "At the time, the victim was able to talk to us—she suffered injuries to her head and legs. She was wearing a bicycle helmet."
The incident occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m. on Sunday.
"She was immediately transported to Westchester Medical Center," Campion reported.
The department was notified of her death at the hospital at approximately 9 a.m. yesterday.
"That's what prompted us to further our investigation," he said.
At the scene, Naber was arrested and charged with driving without her license, driving with New York State driving privileges suspended and driving a vehicle that was uninspected.
"She was arrested because the driving privilege [infraction] is a misdemeanor," Campion said. "Once we knew that Ms. Shakman died Monday, we furthered our investigation to see what other charges may be filed. We are doing that in conjunction with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office."
Shakman's autopsy is scheduled for today and the department is awaiting the results.
"Depending on the results of the autospy," Campion said, "we will gather all the evidence and meet with the District Attorney to determine what charges should be filed."
Campion said it does not appear speeding, alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, but rather the driver's "inattention."
Following her arrest on Sunday, Naber was released on her own recognizance and is due in village court on July 25.
