Driver Faces DWI Charges After Hitting Pedestrian

Motorist accused in hit-and-run crash that left victim with multiple trauma.

 

A pedestrian was struck by a car driven by a Rye Brook motorist who left the scene of the accident on West Putnam Avenue early Friday, according to Greenwich Police.

A 23-year-old Greenwich man was struck by a vehicle while crossing West Putnam Avenue at Western Junior Highway about 12:15 a.m. July 27 and seriously injured, police said. "The vehicle had fled the scene of the crash prior to the arrival of police and had not stopped to render aid to the victim," who was taken to an area hospital for treatment of multiple trauma, according to a press release issued by police.

Police say the driver returned to the scene while officers were investigating the accident scene. According to the statement, police said the driver "appeared to be under the influence" and was given field sobriety tests.

The driver, identified as Matthew Jay Meyers, 18, of 5 Legendry Circle, Rye Brook, NY, who was charged with second-degree assault with a motor vehicle while intoxicated; DWI (Under 21); possession of marijuana under 1/2 ounce; possession of drug paraphernalia; evading responsibility; traveling unreasonably fast, and operating a motor vehicle without proper endorsement.

Myers is scheduled to appear Aug. 10 in state Superior Court in Stamford. Information on Myers' bond was not provided by police.
