Coyote with Mange Caught in Rye Brook

Village officials said its trapper caught the coyote on Sunday.

More than two weeks after officials in Rye captured and killed a coyote, the Village of Rye Brook has captured another coyote, as well.

Village officials said today that its trapper caught a young coyote on Sunday near Ridge Street, south of Betsy Brown Road.

The trapper caught the coyote using a catch-pole after a resident called the police to report a sighting near Betsy Brown Road.

Village officials said though they advocate relocation, the village had to euthanize the coyote because it had advanced stages of mange.

Sarcoptic mange is caused by small mites that burrow into the skin and cause severe irritation, loss of fur and infection. Mange is usually transferred from animal to animal, though humans also can be infected with a different form of the contagious skin disease.

Village Administrator Chris Bradbury said the coyote only had fur on its tail and was acting lethargic, which enabled the village's trapper to catch it.

Bradbury said the trapper chased the coyote from Betsy Brown Road to Ridge Street after the resident reported the sighting. The coyote was caught near a wooded area.

Rye Brook is using Jim Horton, owner of Quality Pro Pest and Wildlife Services and the same trapper being employed by Rye City.

Though there have been no coyote attacks in Rye Brook, two Rye coyote attacks in June have caused the village to be more vigilant. The village recently instituted a four-week coyote hazing program, which began on August 6.

Bradbury said the village will continue with its trapping and hazing program and asks that residents continue to report sightings to police.

The village is tracking all sightings and plotting them on an updated map on its website. Residents can visit the village's website, www.ryebrook.org, for more information.
