No Smoking on WCC Campus: The Right Choice?

Westchester Community College cracks down on smoking this month, following in others' footsteps.

Smokers in the Hudson Valley have seen available spots to light up diminish in past months.

Recently, cigarettes were banned on train platforms for Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road customers. Commuters who brush off the moratorium can face ejection, a $50 fine and/or imprisonment of not more than 30 days.

In Rockland County, the Palisades Center issued a crackdown on cigarettes in May.

Now another spot if off-limits: the sprawling Westchester Community College campus in Valhalla. The policy went into effect at the start of 2012 as a voluntary ban, but did not see enforcement until this September.

"Whereas the previous policy prohibited smoking in specific areas, this policy promotes a healthy environment by eliminating any form of tobacco use anywhere on campus," the school notes on its website.

The new rules apply to students, faculty and staff. Officials say they aim for voluntary compliance, but smoking can sometimes result in "disciplinary actions."

Rockland Community College in Suffern is currently smoke-free, as well.

Let's look at the appropriateness of this post. First, it's clearly an ad because it points to aRead More specific insurance agent at a specific agency to contact. Second, it attempts to hide being an ad behind what may be useful information (or not). Third, the "person" who posted it doesn't use their real name. Instead, they use a pseudonym Divorce Information NOW. That doesn’t seem terribly reassuring to me. This the third advertising post on the “announcements” space since Rye Patch converted to the new site layout. Seems a bit of a mess to me. But hopefully someone will come along and figure out who the real poster is, their link to the advertised agent and agency, and then delete the post. After all, if it’s an ad, it should be labeled as such and the poster should pay for having it run. If that doesn’t happen, Patch won’t be able to pay its employees to keep real content on the site.
