National Board of Boilers and Pressure Vessel Inspectors Code

The National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) was first published in 1945 as a guide for chief inspectors. It has become an internationally recognized standard, adopted by most US and Canadian jurisdictions. The NBIC provides standards for the installation, inspection, and repair and/or alteration of boilers, pressure vessels, and pressure relief devices.

The National Board is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited standards developing organization. It follows approved standards development procedures (NB-240, National Board Inspection Code Procedures) and undergoes regular audits by ANSI.

The NBIC is developed and maintained by consensus committee (the NBIC Committee) composed of industry experts.

Each year, the NBIC committees update the NBIC. The updates are presented on the National Board’s Web site for public review in April-May and August-September. Finalized updates are published annually as an addendum, generally in January.

The information in this section of the Web site has been organized into three major categories.

The NBIC Committee Information includes a description of the NBIC committee structure, meeting schedules, minutes, and agendas.

The NBIC Publication Information describes announcements about future code addenda and documents for public review. It also contains errata and interpretations for several NBIC editions.

The NBIC Committee Log-In is restricted to members of the NBIC main committee, subcommittees, and subgroups. It was developed for the recording of letter ballots, allowing committee members to vote on items electronically.
