“It’s finally happening,” emailed Jim Amico. and , Amico and his wife Maggie will finally see a permanent stop sign installed at the intersection of Midland Avenue and Palisade Road this Monday.
that seemed somehow just out of grasp. But this Monday, road workers will make the temporary sign installed two weeks ago a permanent fixture.
When the temporary sign went up, Jim and Maggie were caught off guard. No one sent advance word. And after years of waiting, neither Jim nor Maggie wanted to get their hopes up too soon.
"It's not written in stone, so I'm going to hold my breath until the time comes," Jim said.
They were perhaps wise to reserve reaction. That same day, on May 9, city manager Scott Pickup sent an email cautioning Amico that a permanent stop sign might be months away:
As you are well aware, this is a pilot project, and will be tested for impacts on speeds exiting the intersection and entering the school zone and for any traffic accidents. After the initial 8-12 week evaluation (which will include 2 speed studies with school in and out), a report on the changes will be sent to the Council with a recommendation before any permanent installation.
"I'm just happy that it's finally coming to light," said Maggie Amico. "There's a light at the end of the tunnel and I can finally see it now. Instead of it being talk, it's action, something actually happening."
But something managed to move things forward more quickly. Rye Police sent out a public NIXLE alert last Friday announcing the permanent installation.
