Helping Hands for the Homeless & Hungry Seeks Volunteers

There are multiple ways to help the "Empty School Backpack Project," and students seeking community service hours can arrange to have their time verified.

Homeless & Hungry Inc will hold the 26th Annual Empty School Backpack project on August 12th at 910 Boston Post Rd. in Rye with a goal of providing 2,000 new backpacks, each filled with 18 school items for grades K through 12.

New this year, Helping Hands will provide a scientific calculator for middle and high school students.  These backpacks will be distributed to underprivileged students, many residing in homeless shelters, through 19 of our partner agencies throughout lower Westchester County.

How can you make a difference? It’s easy! Here are two ways to lend a hand.
1. Make a Donation
The Backpack Project is funded entirely by donations from our annual appeal. Just $25 will provide one ‘school ready’ backpack – that is incredible!

With a goal of providing 2000 backpacks this year, funds are critical.  Donations can be made through our website: www.helpinghandsrye.org or via mail (Helping Hands for the Homeless & Hungry, Inc., P.O. Box 982, Rye, New York 10580).

2. Volunteers Volunteers are needed on Monday, August 12 unload and set up supplies and backpacks, and on Tuesday August 13 10:00am -12:00noon to fill empty school bags.

Tuesday, the day to fill the backpacks, is a better day for young children to help out.  Community service hours are available to students who request a form.  Volunteers are needed for both days.

Since 1987, this event has enabled over 21,000 students to start their school years with all the supplies they need to succeed. More information is available on the Helping Hands website: www.helpinghandsrye.org. Questions can be directed to helpinghandsrye@gmail.com, or call Susan Salice at (914) 980-3511.
