Sustainable Playland Inc. Fundraiser at Coveleigh Beach Club

With the future of Playland at stake, Sustainable Playland Inc. (SPI), the newly formed non-profit group, will propose a community-based solution that preserves Playland’s valuable open space while providing for increased access to Long Island Sound and its shoreline.  The proposed park will remain fully in the public domain to serve the interests of present and future generations.  To help pay for the costs of creating its proposal, SPI will host a fundraiser on Friday, Mar. 4 from 7 - 9 p.m. at Coveleigh Beach Club in Rye.  To find out more information about the event and to purchase tickets, visit www.sustaniableplayland.org.

“Now is a unique time to reinvent Playland for the 21st Century, but it won’t happen on its own.  We need our local citizens to support our efforts and mission and to join us to raise the necessary funds to submit SPI’s proposal,” says Peter Rukeyser, one of the founders of the non-profit organization.

“Westchester County’s Request for Proposal (RFP) absolutely opens the door for developers and other for profit organizations whose primary goal is obviously financial gain,” says Sandhya Subbarao, another founding member of SPI.  “As far as we know, SPI is the only organization that has sought input from County residents to understand their present day needs vis-à-vis Playland.  We want to work with everyone that has a stake in Playland –people and politicians.  After all, we are steering the same ship!”

Based on input from community members, SPI foresees a future Playland that combines the nostalgia of yesterday with the evolved and informed needs of today.  The new Playland will feature amusement park components, athletic fields, educational and arts facilities, playgrounds and restaurants, not hotels and office parks -- the domain of developers.  SPI will model its plans for governance and operations on the highly-successful public-private partnership of Central Park.
