Week in Review: More Snowfall, Local Organizations Spread Goodwill

A recap of the week's top stories on Rye Patch.

Rye Patch began the week with a story on a good cause. The Osborn, Rye Rotary Club, Rye Lions Club and others have partnered for a . Last year, 700 coats were donated during the drive and the need is greater this year, according to The Osborn's Susan Olson, who sprearheaded the effort. After we published the article, Olson said she's received great feedback and interest from readers. We're glad we could help, and you can, too. The coat drive will take place every Tuesday in January, so read our story to find out how you can participate in this worthwhile effort.

We also , which is competing for $250,000 in grant funding in the Pepsi Refresh contest. Rye resident Jordana Holovach established the organization 10 years ago in honor of her son, Jacob, who suffers from Canavan Disease. The disease, which is prevalent in people of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, affects the production of myelin, or white matter, in the brain. If enough myelin isn't produced, it affects a person's basic motor skills. Those with Canavan disease can often become blind, paralyzed or die because of it. Holovach is working to find a cure to the disease, and winning the $250,000 grant could help to fund this lifesaving research.

We also had a bit of crime news this week.  (who says neighborhood watches aren't a good thing). Police caught the thieves red-handed as they tried to steal jewelry and a television from a home on Woodland Avenue.

. A 57-year-old woman was arrested for prescription fraud after trying to use a forged prescription to get hydrocodone pills. Another woman was arrested for having a young child riding in the passenger's seat without a seat belt, while an Acker Drive resident reported that someone had damaged a lawn by spinning a car around in circles on a grassy area—I guess some people find amusement in different ways.

Our other stories included a profile of , who says his special burgers have customers flocking to the eatery near Playland. We also covered . Thank goodness it didn't cause the same havoc as the 16 inches of snow that blanketed the area after Christmas. The only disruptions included early dismissals, which for students in Rye and Blind Brook, was a welcome occurrence.
