Rye Will Begin Annual Sidewalk Program

The city will repair the sidewalks of 41 properties.

Rye will soon begin repairing defective sidewalks of property owners, as the city just awarded a more than $86,000 contract to a construction company for its Annual Sidewalk/Curb Program.

The city received 12 bids for the repairs, but awarded the $86,675 contract to Contech Construction Technologies, the lowest bidder.

The company has done quality work for the city in the past, according to the City's Engineer and Director of Public Works George Mottarella.

Every year, the city repairs the sidewalks of several properties, some of which have been damaged by a city tree. The city sends a notice to owners, alerting them about defective sidewalks located on their properties.  Property owners can either choose to make the repairs themselves or be placed on the city's list if they don't respond in a timely fashion.

Contech will do the repair for property owners added to the city's list. The owners will then have to reimburse the city for the costs. For sidewalks that have been damaged by a city tree, the city pays the full costs. The city will use money from its general revenues to pay for these repairs.

There are currently 41 properties on the list for sidewalk repairs, including 10 properties on Boston Post Road, and three on Osborn Road, Purchase Street and Allendale Drive, respectively.

The repairs for the 41 properties total more than $100,000, but the Contech contract will give the city a savings on these upgrades.

The city has yet to announce a date for when the Annual Sidewalk/Curb program will begin.
