Local Libraries a Refuge for Job Seekers

More residents are turning to libraries as a resource for their job search, even while many libraries are facing economic challenges.

Local libraries have become a refuge for residents seeking jobs.

Library directors at The Mamaroneck Public Library, Rye Free Reading Room, and Port Chester-Rye Book Public Library all say they have seen an increase in the number of people using the library's computers and internet access to work on their resumes, cover letters, search and apply for jobs, and network with other library patrons in the last 18 months.

On a recent Sunday, the Rye Free Reading Room had people standing outside waiting for the library to open, ranging from parents with small children to people in their late 50s and early 60s. Within minutes of opening, most the computers were taken.

The majority of patrons were concentrated in the reference section, many looking at career and resume writing books. Some used the library's computers to write resume and cover letters, while one patron updated his LinkedIn profile.

Director Kurt Hadeler says it's hard to believe the amount of people who come to use library technology.

"We've seen a lot of people use the library in new ways to check resumes and work on preparing for interviews," Hadeler said. "The library's become a refuge where people can sit down, write and search for jobs."

According to Robin Lettieri, director of Rye Brook-Port Chester Library, circulation of books increased by 36 percent from August 2008 to August 2009. The villages of Rye Brook and Port Chester share the library and each pay a portion of the library's budget.

"Many people are coming in to read the newspaper and magazines, and to socialize," Lettieri said.

The Mamaroneck Public Library is in a temporary location while the main library building is undergoing a renovation. Still, Director Susan Benton says the library has never been a more important resource for job seekers.

"Everyday, job seekers are here to work on their resumes; look for openings and submit resumes by email," Benton said. "The staff help people who have never had an email account and must learn how to submit resumes and apply for jobs by email. The job seekers get to know each other and wish each other luck when one of them has an interview.  Sometimes one of these job seekers stop by just to say 'I got the job!' It is a warm and supportive group of library users and librarians."

However, libraries face not only a growing number of job seekers, but also increasing financial burdens. The response has been to propose over $2.4 million in budget cuts for area libraries.

The Rye Free Reading Room budget has remained the same for the past two years despite rising expenses. Hadeler says the library is very cost-sensitive, but also hopes to respond to the growing demand for upgraded technology by possibly adding several computers.

"The Rye community is very supportive and the success of our annual fundraiser has allowed us to stay open for more hours a week," Hadeler said.

The Rye Brook-Port Chester Library was asked to cut $67,000 from its proposed budget this year, and while the library is still negotiating with Rye Brook, the proposed cuts would keep the library's budget the same as it has been for the past several years.

The Mamaroneck Public Library, while experiencing similar financial pressure, has been able to help job seekers through the Westchester Library System's online resources JobJourney program. Those who wish to participate in a two-part introduction to the system can sign up by calling 914-698-1250, ext. 28. The instruction will take place on Tuesday, May 4, and Thursday, May 6, at 9 a.m. Space is limited.
