Blizzard of 2010 Hits Rye

Several offices in the area will close early because of the storm.

The blizzard of 2010 is officially underway. The Rye area is blanketed in snow, but there's more to come. The National Weather Service forecasted up to three inches of snow starting at midnight through early Wednesday morning. Snow mixed with sleet will hit the area during the day, accumulating to between 6 to 10 inches. Winds could reach 37 mph, while the overnight forecast calls for up to four more inches of snow.

Several businesses and local government offices are closed or will close early today. Here's a rundown:

Schools

Rye and Blind Brook Public Schools are closed today and are scheduled to reopen tomorrow. Afterschool activities are also postponed.

Rye City Hall

The building is open during regular hours, 9-5 p.m. The Rye City Council had a regular meeting scheduled for 8 p.m., but will now hold an abbreviated meeting at 7 p.m. that will likely last a hour. They've streamlined their agenda and cancelled all their presentations.

Rye Department of Public Works trucks started salting the roads at around 4 a.m. and will be out for the next 24 hours.

 "We have every piece of equipment out there right now," said Pam Fazzino, clerk for the department.

Rye Brook Village Hall

Village Hall will close at 1:30 p.m. No meetings are scheduled for tonight.

Bradbury said the Public Works Department has 12-14 plows and are out salting and working the main roads, which include King Street and Westchester Avenue. Crews have been out since 6 a.m., he said.

"We have a full crew and they are prepared for the storm," Bradbury said.

Town of Rye

The Town of Rye is fully open and operating. However, based on conditions town office will be closing at 1:00PM, according to town official Bishop Nowotnik.

The Rye Town Park Commission meeting scheduled for tonight has been cancelled. No re-schedule date has been announced as of yet.

Police and Fire

Authorities in the Rye area have dealt with mostly minor accidents this morning, according to scanner reports. One car required towing. 

Con Edison

Sandy Miller, a spokesperson for Con Edison, said the company has crews in the area but no issues have been reported in Rye or Rye Brook as of this morning. She said weather officials are forecasting the storm will pick up in the afternoon, so Con Edison is monitoring the situation. 

"We have augmented, overhead crews in the area and we've been watching the storm for days," Miller said. "There haven't been any winds picking up, so that's good." 

Store Closings

Rye Country Store:  Will be open until at least 2 p.m., but if the storm worsens the store will close early, according to the owner.

Rye Free Reading Room: Closed because of the storm

Rye Smoke Shop: Store scheduled to close sometime after 12 p.m.

Le Pain Quotidien:  Will close at 5 p.m. today.

Starbucks: Store will close at 1 p.m.

Super Stop and Shop, Port Chester: Store will be open regular hours until midnight, barring any emergencies that force an early closing.

Public Transit

Westchester County Airport is open, but passengers should check with their airlines for delays.

The Bee Line is currently operating with scattered delays on Routes 2, 6,8, 13, 19, 30 and 32.
