Word on the Street: Operation Hurricane Preparedness
Patch talked to Rye area shoppers Saturday as they prepared for Hurricane Irene
Many Rye residents headed to the supermarket Saturday to get their last minute essentials.
D’Agostino’s and A&P Fresh in Rye Brook had an ample supply of crucial items in stock, ready to meet the demand of local consumers.
As the clock dwindles down on Irene’s arrival, Patch spent some time in both supermarkets to find out how residents were preparing for the storm.
Whitney Bullard, Rye Brook, with her daughter, Winslow age 10
“We are just making sure we have food and batteries for the flashlights, and we are tying up everything that is loose outside. We have water already but we are just getting some milk, bread and vegetables.”- Whitney Bullard
“The hurricane is very exciting to me but you have to stay inside. I am making sure my mom has all of my favorite snacks like Pirate Booty.”- Winslow Bullard
Anthony, Manager of D’Agostino’s in Rye Brook
“Residents have been stocking up on water, milk, Parmalat, ice, dry ice, peanut butter, cereal and everything that is not perishable. We just got in more shipment so our shelves are fully loaded with everything people need for Irene.”
Dena A., of Rye Brook
“I have a baby at home who is 15 months so I am in here making sure I have enough milk and fruit for my daughter. But other than that I am going to be in the house. We are actually supposed to go on vacation to Narragansett, leaving today so we’ll see how that goes. Hopefully, our house will be ok when we get there.”
Joie Cooney, of Rye
“We are not doing a whole lot. Just making sure that there is enough food, water and batteries in the house. We are going to stay home because we live in a house on a very tall hill, so we will be safe.”
Gwen Parnett, of Rye Brook
“I am not nervous. Today I am getting a few things. The media tries to invoke so much fear in the public. I am just trying to be wise, making sure I have what we need in the house just in case we are out of power for a few days.”
