Scam Phone Call Responsible For Rye Country Day School Evacuation

Police evacuated Rye Country Day School as a safety precaution after someone called the school and referenced explosives and having snipers on the campus around 12 p.m. Tuesday, according to Rye City Police Commissioner William Connors. The call was part of an ongoing "attempt to scam money out of an elderly employee," Connors said. Police do not believe anyone is in danger at this time.
The employee has received similar calls in the past, but none that have included threats of explosives or snipers, according to Connors. The Village of Rye Brook police department was already investigating the past calls before today's threat.
Rye Brook, Rye, county and state police, as well as the FBI, are currently investigating today's threatening phone call and working to find its origin.
The evacuation was a safety precaution. The school's approximately 700 students were taken to a private facility that is designated as an evacuation location.
Police are still completing a search of the school at this time.
Rye City School District cancelled all outdoor activities in response to the threat.
Police expect school to be held as normal tomorrow.
