The Great Escape: A Weekend in Art

Local art exhibits perfect to utilize that 'adults-only' time.

Why trek to the Museum of Modern Art when there’s a booming art scene right in your own backyard?

This week, local galleries are brimming with fashion, photography, and even an antique auction sure to feed your daily dose of local culture. For an added bonus, pair these outings with a relaxing Saturday afternoon brunch.

  • The folks at Clay Art Center take functional pottery very seriously— by devoting this month’s show to handmade plates and platters by 110 local and national artists. A kick-off celebration for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? will be held Feb. 5 from 6-8 p.m. at the facility.
  • For style devotees, the Rye Arts Center display, Dressing the Part: Women and Social Change is a must-see. From illustrations by a former Harper’s Bazaar artist to piles of jewelry originating from the turn of the century, a visit here is sure to tickle all Westchester fashionistas. If this sounds like a snore-fest for your significant other, see it with a group of your best girlfriends.
  • Superbowl Sunday Fine Art and Antique Auction: Take a dip into the past with Clarke Auction Gallery by perusing everything from Spanish oil paintings to silver candelabras this Sunday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. You may even find that new ornament to hang above your mantle you’ve been scouring local shops for months.
  • : This exhibit in pictures at Harrison Public Library serves as a passport into one man’s memory as he takes viewers on a journey into his subconscious—packed with nature, people, and places. Get a chance to chat with the artist at an opening reception for the showcase this Feb. 5 from 2-4 p.m. The show will be on display until Feb. 28.
