Spend a Day in the Ancient World

Dr. Peter Feinman, founder and president of the Institute of History, Archaeology, and Education, will present a series of lectures at the Rye Free Reading Room on Saturday, November 5.  The first one, “Egypt: Land of Ma’at, Times of Chaos” at 10 a.m.,  examines the Ancient Egyptian cultural construct as fixed by the flux of the Nile River and looks at how the Egyptians responded when everything did not go according to plan.  The second, “Mesopotamia: Kings of Unity, Eras of Change” at 11:30 a.m., treats how the Mesopotamian kings (whether Sumerian, Akkadian, Amorite, Kassite or Assyrian) used art, story and political achievement to create the appearance that they were kings of the universe.  The third, “Israel and Palestine: An Ancient Story” at 2 p.m., considers the ways the archaeological finds of the past 150 years have contributed to understanding a relationship that began millennia ago and resonates today.  The final lecture, “Israel, Damascus and Hamath” at 3:30 p.m., examines primary source materials that shows the shifting relationships among the ancient peoples of Israel and Syria.

The public is invited to attend any or all of the lectures, which are free of cost.  Dr. Feinman received his B.A. in history from the University of Pennsylvania, a M.Ed. from New York University, an MBA from New York University, and an Ed. D. from Columbia University.  The Institute of History, Archaeology, and Education is a non-profit organization which provides enrichment for schools, professional development for teachers, and programs for the public.
