Peace Flag Art Exhibit

Project Peace Flag", a grant funded program lead by fiber artist, Jeannie Thomma, will culminate with an exhibition of hand-felted wool Peace Flags at the Rye Arts Center.   Each flag was created as a personal symbol of peace by a resident of Westchester County.  Included in the show will be a series of a dozen Peace Flags made by the artist herself.   An opening reception will take place at The Rye Arts Center on Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 2-4pm.  The event is free and open to the public.  The program, entitled Project Peace Flag: Voicing our Visions, was designed by Ms. Thomma to foster community, creativity and peace.

The exhibition at the Rye Arts Center is being organized to showcase the art works made by over 200 Westchester residents ranging in age from 5-85, each of whom participated in one of the free community felting classes held at various sites throughout the county over the past year.  Felting is an ancient craft in which cleaned and dyed wool fibers are layered to create a design.  Following the addition of warm soapy water, the colorful wool fibers are agitated on a plastic mat, allowing the individual fibers to knot together and become a single piece of fabric...simultaneously yielding a work of art.

The exhibit of community Peace Flags will remain on display in the performing arts room at The Rye Arts Center and can be viewed on the following days and times: December 14 from 9:30-3pm,  December 15 from 9:30-2:30pm,  December 17 from 9:30-3pm.  This project was made possible by the Arts Alive program of ArtsWestchester, with funding from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts.
