What Kids Are Reading in Rye?

Are your kids making progress on their summer reading lists?

Rye middle schoolers ended the school year with marching orders to complete two books over the summer, one mandatory reading title and a list of suggestions for the other.

Sixth Grade

Mandatory:

Schooled, Gordon Korman

Suggested Titles:

  • Black Stallion, Walter Farley
  • Alabama Moon, Watt Key
  • Miss Spitfire, Sarah Miller

Seventh Grade

Mandatory Title:

Name of This Book is Secret, Pseudonymous Bosch

Suggested Titles:

  • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams
  • Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree, Lauren Tarshis
  • Puzzling World of Winston Breen, Eric Berlin

Eighth Grade

Mandatory Title:

Matched, Ally Condie

Suggested Titles:

  • Andromeda Strain, Michael Crichton
  • Upon the Head of the Goat, Aranka Siegal
  • Warriors Don't Cry, Melba Pattillo Beals

By now, your tweens should be fully immersed in their first book, if not on to the second or third page-turner.

A. Who the heck is "Sam Gentile"? Is "he" qualified to make the kind of postsRead More he's been making? Does he have an undisclosed financial interest in what he's posting? This sure looks like an [unidentified as such] sales promotion for Staples. B. On what basis does "he" assert that Rye Teachers are paying out of their own pockets for school expenses? I'm sure some are, but is it reasonable to base such a broadbrush / dramatic statement based on a nation-wide survey the source of which isn't even specified in the post? Was the survey perhaps assembled by Staples or some other business?
