Westchester Children's Museum to Keep Kids Active at Annual Rye Festival

A press release from the Westchester Children's Museum.

The Westchester Children’s Museum (WCM) will bring a range of activities – from a fantasy-themed scavenger hunt to outdoor arts and crafts – to the second annual Edith G. Read Sanctuary Fall Fest 2013 in Rye on Saturday, October 19. WCM will be providing a sneak preview of the type of creativity that has come to define WCM’s vision for children’s activity and programming. Events will be coordinated as part of WCM’s Museum Without Walls.

This will mark the WCM’s second year participating in the family event, which drew 1,500 people to the 179-acre park last year. In addition to the WCM Kids’ Corner, the all-ages festival will feature storytelling, a live birds of prey demonstration, music, face painting and more. This year’s event will be sponsored by L.L. Bean and Whole Foods of Port Chester.

“The Westchester Children’s Museum Kids’ Corner was a huge hit last year,” said Cynthia Howard, co-chair of the Fall Fest event and a Friends of Read board member. “We’re so happy they are partnering with us again this year.”

The festival will run from noon until 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Free parking will be available.

“Our team of experienced educators and volunteers look forward to events like this because they enjoy engaging children – and adults – in opportunities to play, imagine, learn and create,” said Bev McAllister, Program Coordinator for Museum Without Walls. “And, of course, these will all be important features of the museum experience when it occupies its boardwalk site.”

The WCM capital campaign will be raising $10 million within a 24 month window to support construction of the new museum and its exhibits. The funds – contributed by community members, local organizations and area businesses – will allow the museum to construct a brick-and-mortar home with exhibit installations and a performance theater. Funding to date has allowed WCM to develop architectural plans and exhibit designs, launch its Museum Without Walls educational outreach program, and hire a talented and passionate staff. The museum plans to open its doors by 2015. Until then, the WCM will maintain its highly successful Museum Without Walls program that has reached more than 9,000 children through classroom programs and venues across Westchester.
