Rye Patch found a group learning the game of Mah Jongg at this afternoon.
A copy of Tom Sloper's The Red Dragon and The West Wind lay on the table as the group of 7 and their 2 instructors selected tiles and took in the rules of the game.
According to Sloper's website, the game originated in China and has many variations among Asian countries. The game first came to the United States around 1920 and became especially popular among women and in Jewish communities.
The group at Rye Free Reading Room will meet for two more of their weekly sessions.
