A man who is running 700 miles in two weeks from Maine’s Acadia National Park to the president's inauguration in Washington, D.C. to raise funds for victims of the Newtown massacre, Wounded Warriors and cancer research passed through Port Chester and Rye today.
“I can’t believe I just ran from Maine to New York,” said Maine resident Gary Allen, 56, while chomping on a snack after stopping for a bathroom break in Port Chester around 3 p.m. "It's pretty cool."
“I feel like I just ran 450 miles, which is a pretty unbelievable feeling. But I also feel so inspired by our country,” Allen said. His entrance into the village marked his 450th mile.
Allen’s brother Larry Allen is accompanying him by car, along with law enforcement agencies from the towns through which he runs. Gary thanked the Port Chester and other police departments that have escorted him through the first half of his trip and thanked hundreds of people who have donated items and services through his website Maine2DCrun.com.
From New York, he will run through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland before reaching Washington, D.C. on Jan.21 for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. He does not have a ticket to the inauguration, but will be happy just to make it to D.C., he said.
Allen primarily hopes to raise funds for his causes, but also hopes to inspire people to live healthy lives and be active.
