Hanukkah Begins at Sunset; Sold-Out Maccabeats Concert Tomorrow

The eight-day Festival of Lights begins today at sunset. The Jewish holiday marks the triumph of the Maccabees in reclaiming the holy city of Jerusalem.

Tonight begins the eight-day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. The most recognized tradition in the daily lighting of candles of the menorah; each one signifying the surprising endurance of a one day supply of oil after One of the most anticipated Hanukkah events in Rye is already sold-out.

, a Reform Jewish congregation established in 1948, expects over 500 people to attend a sold-out concert and dinner Wednesday evening with the popular singing group The Maccabeats. There will also be smaller events throughout the season.

, another Rye-area Reform Jewish temple established in 1952 from the Westchester School of Judaism, is currently constructing a new, 4,500 square foot Jewish Life Center

While not considered a high holiday, the historical significance of the period ranges among Jewish communities from themes of political and religious freedom to familial connection, it is undoubtedly an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of Jewish culture during a season where a great deal of focus is placed on the Christian religious celebration of Christmas.

Since the two holidays will be celebrated at the same time this year, hopefully communities of both faiths will be brought closer together.
