Are Metro-North Bar Cars Coming Back? Westchester Commuters Hope So

Train commuters on Metro-North's New Haven line miss the bar cars, according to a report in USA Today.

Less than 10 of the old bar cars, part of the old rail cars from the 1970s, are still in use, and those are expected to be retired later this spring.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is considering new bar cars for the new trains, and has hired a firm to study the feasibility, but department has not committed to the possibility, according to USA Today.

What we really need is more seats, and the bar cars reduce the number of seats. No to bar cars, I say.

When coming home from a long day at work, many commuters appreciate a drink. Nothing wrong with an alcoholic drink as long as they're no driving post train ride involved. And, if you think eliminating the bar cars is going to change the afternoon train drink tradition, ya got another think comin 'cause there's a lot of alcohol sold practically at the door step of each train.

Rye Reader has it right. There aren't enough seats. It's easy to buy drinks on the platform before boarding. We don't need bar cars, we need more seats (and more quiet cars!)

Yes, to more quiet cars. No to the bar car. People are entitled to a drink after work, but they can buy it before they board. Many of these people do drive home. If they are served on the train, they are more likely to have more than one.

@Tim - not sure that buying on board versus pre-boarding makes a difference in terms of likelihood of single / multiple drinks.
