About Town: Weekend Events In and Around Rye

From the library to the Y, films to monarch butterflies, The Marshlands to Soleryders, weather can't rain on parade of events hereabouts, especially with religious holidays coming up.

The lingering after effects of Tropical Storm Irene are still being felt throughout Rye, but the show must go on, so to speak, and the schedule of events for the coming week shows that Rye is adaptable come rain or come shine.

The library's Fuzzy Lemons concert on the Village Green Saturday was postponed due to the threat of rain. They moved the show indoors with a free showing of the family-oriented film “The Perfect Game” (about poor kids from Mexico who make it to the Little League World Series). They are playing their own ongoing variation on the upstairs/downstairs theme with a new, different, and better Children’s Room continuing to emerge on the second floor with ever more books, DVDs and CDs appearing on the shelves.

The relocation was necessary because of wet carpet and ongoing floor repair in the basement Children’s Room. All the books are safe and there is an extensive selection of children’s material available.

The Rye Y is also dealing with the after effects of the Blind Brook overflow post-Irene and the recent rains. The new showers in the renovated men’s locker room have been installed. But they haven’t quite figured out how to mount the soap dispensers in the new showers. They're still working on it.

Numerous improvements have been made during the Y’s ongoing post-Irene recovery –all the programs are up and running, and the Spinning Room and The Free Style Fitness Zone are once again operational.
