About Town: Weekend Events In and Around Rye
A rock'n'roll photo workshop, charitable golf tournaments, and an ice cream fundraiser. There's lots going on 'round town --and you ain't seen nothing yet unless you read on about more local goings on from "Love Letters" to volunteer options .
From a “Love Letters” performance and a rock’n’roll photography workshop at the Rye Arts Center (RAC) and from all-the-ice-cream-you-can-eat at Rye Rec for $5 for a worthy cause and Rye YMCA Teen Time Nights, there’s lots going on, in and around Rye this weekend, including golf benefit tournaments staged by groups ranging from TWIG to Guiding Eyes and a volunteer clean-up at a local wildlife sanctuary.
Friday
The Small Town Theatre Company will stage A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters” at 8 p.m. at the Rye Arts Center.

Gurney tracks the relationship of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner over the course of more than half-a-century, from second grade through marriage, divorce, careers, affairs and middle age in sickness and health until….
Maggie Thompson and Scott Brannon play the star-crossed duo in the company founded by chemical engineer Sam Morrell and Donna Garr, retired head of the Guidance Department at Westlake High and the ex-wife of famed Rye High football coach Dino Garr. They stage events in Armonk, Bedford and Rye.

Y Teen Lounge events are on tap Friday (for high schoolers) and Saturday (for middle schoolers) from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Rye YMCA.
The Teen Access program offers opportunities to socialize in Teen Lounge as well as dance, swim, play basketball, work out, play video games, air hockey or ping pong and more. Middle school events also include a jousting tournament and a bouncy castle. Information: 967-6363.
Saturday
Rock photographer and author Steve Rosenfeld will use stories and anecdotes from his recently published book Fun and Dangerous– about his life photographing rock icons– to jazz up his RAC rock photography workshop "Capturing the Sound" from 1–4 p.m. It is geared towards those aged 12 and up who want to learn about live music photography.
From composing the shot to working under different lighting conditions to discussing their work as a group, Rosenfeld will also lead a group tour of RAC’s ongoing “Off the Record” rock-accented exhibit on New York music after Woodstock. Bring a digital camera and USB cable to particpate. Or you can simply listen and observe; maybe even daydream about the “Summer of Love.”

Here’s a scoop: The fourth annual Super Scooper All-You-Can Eat Ice Cream Fundraiser will take place from 12-to-3 p.m. at Rye Recreation. It's only $5. Ice cream will be donated by Longford’s Ice Cream of Rye and Piazza Pizzeria. Proceeds will benefit Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research.

The Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary at Rye Playland will hold a Volunteer Corps Workday starting at 10 a.m. with volunteers needed to help remove invasive plants, do trail maintenance, clear debris and perform other tasks.
Friends of Read Wildlife Sanctuary will provide lunch. Information: 967-8720.

Shreding anyone? Attendant will be on hand to assist residents who bring items for shredding to the Town of Rye Parking Lot, across the street from Rye Town Hall, 10 Pearl St., Port Chester, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Donors needed: Life-saving blood is in short supply. The Rye YMCA will stage a blood drive to benefit White Plains Hospital. Refreshments and cookies will be served at the Y’s location at 21 Locust Ave. 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Super Seconds: The nearby Clay Art Center (CAC), 40 Beech St., Port Chester will stage what it calls a family fun event and super seconds sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Artists from throughout tri-state area have donated their irregular, overstocked or outdated pieces of artwork to CAC so there are bargains galore.
There will also be “family friendly” prices for hands-on-clay activities, face painting, hamburgers and hot dogs. All proceeds go to Audrey Greenwald Memorial Equipment Fund. Information: 937-2047.

Sunday
Guiding Eyes and a Quarterback: The 34th annual Guiding Eyes Golf Classic will take place today and tomorrow in an event hosted by New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning at the nearby Whipporwill Club and Mount Kisco Country Club.
In Sunday’s event, 14 top blind golfers will compete for a coveted trophy at Mount Kisco.
The community gets into the swing of things Monday with golf outings at both clubs. Each blind golfer plays with a coach who aides in club selection, alignment, setup and distances. They will also challenge their sighted counterparts to experience how they play despite visual impairment by inviting them to take shots hitting the ball while blindfolded.

Closing Note: Dr. William Maul, Director of Music for around 20 years at Rye’s Church of the Resurrection, will be honored following the 12:30 p.m. Mass Sunday with a reception in the church hall.
Dr. Maul underwent surgery several months ago, is still recuperating, and has decided to retire.
Also earlier that morning, Resurrection Cub Scouts Rye Pack 11 will host the Coffee Hour after the 8:45 a.m. Mass and will be accepting new registrations for interested scouts. Information: 967-0193.
