About Town: Weekend Events In and Around Rye

From workshop on womanly art of self defense to senior swingers (golf variety) going into final rounds of major PGA event, lots going on hereabouts including start of Summer Stage Concert Series at Playland, an Italian-accented carnival and kid-and-family

Here’s a select handful of events in and around Rye this weekend with the accent on handful. Goings-on range from an inaugural Y workshop on the womanly art of self defense to senior swingers (pro golf variety) coming back to Westchester in a final PGA major event going into its final rounds Friday through Sunday.

Rye Playland Summer Stage Concert Series also gets underway this weekend. And for the kids, it's around the world in stories and art at the library and “Back to the Stream Again” in the Marshlands for family fun.

Chart-topping Rhythm & Blues singer/songwriter Miguel opens Rye Playland Summer Stage Concert Series tonight at 8 p.m. at the Tower Stage.

And just who is Miguel? He's penned tunes for Mary J. Blige, Asher Roth and Usher and has a best-selling voice of his own. Performance includes special appearance by Raquel Castro of NBC’s “The Voice.”

Westchester Children’s Museum (WCM), slated for Boardwalk at Rye Playland, will benefit from Tickets Fore Charity program at final major PGA golf event as championship golf returns to Westchester at Westchester Country Club.

The event is called the Constellation Energy Senior Players Golf Championship and features players such as Nick Price and Tom Watson. Tournament is going into final rounds today through Sunday at Westchester Country Club.

WCM will receive $20 from every ticket purchased using its given code 68PKEA.

Switching from the senior golfers back to the kiddy corps, the Summer Fun Club for children aged five and up will visit the countries of Europe in story and art from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Program is called “Bonjour-Guten Tag-Ciao Europe."

Saturday

Handy-with-her-hands instructor Shihan Yvette Columbo will conduct a Women’s Self Defense Workshop for ladies aged 16 and up from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Group Exercise Studio at the .

The program is designed to teach self-defense techniques for first time participants. Workshop “employs a mind and body training approach to maximize a woman’s abilities to be safe in her life both public and private,” according to class description.

Games, rides, live entertainment, casino and more all part of ’s Italian-accented carnival that runs from 6 p.m. to midnight that winds up tonight after a run that began Monday at 136 S. Regent Street in nearby Port Chester.

Frank Marra and his band will supply the entertainment. And vendors galore will be on hand with lots of food, glorious food, including sausage and peppers, pizza fritta, meatballs, pizza, as well as burgers and hot dogs, pork sandwiches, fried oreos, shish kabob, Mexican desserts include wine and peaches, espresso, Italian ices, ice cream and pastries. Sunday

Spring back and forth during free “Back to the Stream Again” program at 3 p.m. at Rye’s off Boston Post Road. Rangers will be on hand to provide insights into a wide variety of life in spring-fed streams. Hand lenses will be provided. Recommended: Wear long pants and shoes because all you know is you never know.
