About Town: Events In and Around Rye

From fireworks to summer band concerts, there's lots going on in town.

When it comes to fireworks, nobody in Westchester does it better than the colorful aerial displays here—but there’s also a lot more going on locally in the next few days than starbursts of pyrotechnics in the night sky.

Events range from summer concerts to a hands-on-history summer colonial camp and even a nurse on hand to dispense free medical advice and a single parents barbeque.

The Rye Brook-Rye Town-Port Chester extravaganza begins at 7:30 p.m. in the nearby John W. Ryan Stadium at Port Chester High School on Tamarack Road in Rye Brook. Rye Brook Mayor Joan Feinstein, Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin and Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla will all be in attendance. The program is dedicated to those in the military and their families, who sacrifice so much for our country’s independence.

The Fourth of July Independence day entertainment at Port Chester High School will include vocalists Michael and Barbara Bassano and Hope Klein, with performances by the Westchester Brassman Drum and Bugle corps under the direction of Joseph Mazzulo. The fireworks display will be in the capable hands of Chuck DiSalvo for Grucci.

Also on tap: A Single Parents Barbecue open to the public (adults as well as their children) from 5 to 9 p.m. at Rye’s Oakland Beach, off Dearborn Avenue in Rye Town Park. For more information: 914-261-1235.

Tuesday:

Hands-On-History Summer Colonial Camp runs through Friday from 10 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. at the Square house Museum, 1 Purchase St., Rye.

Rye Historical Society’s annual camp for youngsters ranging in age from eight to 12 provides a glimpse into what life was like more than 200 years ago in the days when the U.S. and its colonies were really just starting to come of age after America’s battle for independence from England.

Program includes hands-on activities such as learning about colonial gardens and food, playing old-fashioned games, and dabbling in painting, portraits and landscapes. For more information: 914-967-7588.

Programs at Rye’s Wainwright House range from Liz Dottavio’s hour-long Pilates class starting at 9:15 a.m. to Barbara Stroka’s 75-minute Gentle Yoga session beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Carriage House. For more information: 914-967-6363.

Different Sound on the Sound: Rye’s Rock Island Sound Rejects play their own special swinging brand of rock and roll and rhythm 'n' blues for dancing from 7:30 to 9 p.m. during the free Rye Town Park Concert Series in the South Pavilion overlooking Oakland Beach and Long Island Sound.

And the nurse is in Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Port Chester-Rye Brook Library. The nurse will be on site to take blood pressure and answer medical questions as part of a free medical program.
