About Town: Events In and Around Rye

New Rye YMCA programs, tips on filmmaking, fundraisers, organizational birthdays, and tips on subjects ranging from sewing to aging in place.

There's a new Rye YMCA programs in cardio fitness, including kickboxing, a free filmmaking session at the Rye Free Reading Room, a Rotary Club 9oth anniversary celebration to a Rye Brook seniors' year-end celebration and volunteer recognition fete that is also a birthday party of sorts. There’s a lot going on in and around Rye in the next few days.

Events also include a free Spin a Yarn circle at the library and an inaugural golf tournament at Rye’s Apawamis Club to raise money for needy families struggling to obtain the best in heart care for their ailing children.

SPRYE –Seniors Staying in Place in Rye and its Environs– hosts a fundraiser at the American Yacht Club focusing on Aging in Place.

Monday

Colin’s Kids, Inc. holds its inaugural golf tournament at Rye Apawamis Club. Proceeds will support congenital heart defect medical research and financial assistance for families struggling to access care for their children.

Tournament will include longest drive, closest-to-the-pin and hole-in-one contests.

Tuesday

The curtain goes up on “Filmmaking: From Script to Screen” at the Rye Free Reading Room, 7 p.m.

Married writer and director Dan Meisel and Amy Wendel will discuss their feature film “All She Can.” The film tells the story of Luz Garcia, a petite Mexican-American girl whose only hope of getting out of a dying Texas town is to win the state powerlifting championship.

We won’t tell you how whether the movie has a happy or sad ending, but the film’s star Corina Calderon was a hit in her first leading role. The movie was well-received at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Director Wendel won a L’Oreal Paris Women of Vision Award based on the film’s subject matter.

Spin a Yarn Handwork circle does its knit-one-purl-two routine while trading tips and techniques for all skill levels working on knitting and crocheting projects. Rye Free Reading Room, 4-5-p.m. 

Wednesday

SPRYE hosts a fundraising luncheon at the American Yacht Club, 12:30 p.m. with guest speaker Lynn Reichgott, president of At Home on the Sound, a neighboring aging in place organization. SPRYE will also introduce its first Executive Director Betti Weimerheimer.

Rotary Club of Port Chester and Rye Brook holds its 90th anniversary celebration. Cocktails, 6 p.m.; dinner, 7 p.m. Rye Town Hilton, 699 Westchester Ave., Rye Brook. Information: 939-2867.

Rye Brook seniors will hold their year-end celebration and volunteer recognition day at The Davenport Club, New Rochelle. The organization is celebrating being 27 years young. Information: 939-7904.
